The SMU Mustangs are looking to bolster their wide receiver unit with the addition of two transfers: Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move comes after the team lost its leading receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively totaled over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, which has limited his ability to work with several key offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, as well as running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, Hale and Smith have shown promise in their potential contributions.
Ty Hawkins, a redshirt freshman quarterback stepping in for Jennings, highlighted Smith's size and ability to make contested catches, while also noting Hale's impressive speed and agility in evading defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced a significant knee injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season but has since regained his explosive playmaking skills at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens praised Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which he believes will greatly aid the team's offensive strategy. Smith, who accumulated over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his tenure at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style and knack for difficult catches, aligning with the Mustangs' focus on downfield passing.
Additionally, senior Yamir Knight returns after being named Offensive MVP in the Holiday Bowl, and sophomore Jalen Cooper is expected to take on a more significant role following a successful freshman season. With two weeks left in fall camp before facing Florida State on September 7, the team is concentrating on building chemistry and finalizing their depth chart.
