As the Dallas Cowboys near the end of their training camp in Oxnard, the team is focusing on its offensive line depth. While the starting lineup is confirmed, the search for the best backup center is ongoing following the team's first preseason game.

Veteran Matt Hennessy was expected to fill the backup center role, but he has been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury. This situation has prompted the Cowboys to consider T.J. Bass as the leading candidate for backup center, even though he has limited experience in that position.

Bass, who has primarily played guard and started in 10 games over the last three seasons, was given a second-round tender in the offseason worth $5.76 million.

In the initial preseason game, Bass played two series at center before being substituted by Nick Leverett. Although Leverett has primarily played guard, he does have one career start at center from 2024. Following the game, he was seen practicing extensively in the backup center role, indicating the Cowboys may be considering him as a potential option.

The Cowboys are keen to solidify their offensive line depth, especially with starter Cooper Beebe's previous injury history. Currently, Bass is viewed as the frontrunner for the backup center position, but Leverett's performance could impact the final decision as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
