The Dallas Cowboys have secured the services of Von Miller, an eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion, with a one-year contract aimed at bolstering their pass rush. Miller, who leads active players with 136.5 career sacks, recorded 9.0 sacks last season while with Washington.
However, the signing has faced scrutiny from analysts. Bryan Broaddus, a former Cowboys scout now working with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, criticized the move, calling it low-impact and potentially harmful. He indicated that Miller's recent performance did not meet the expectations for a starting player, suggesting that he might not have been signed if he were not a prominent figure in the league.
Broaddus highlighted concerns regarding Miller's speed and ability to close in on plays, which are vital for a top edge rusher. He proposed that the Cowboys might benefit more from James Houston, who is likely to be moved down the rotation. Pro Football Focus rated Miller as 66th among 119 edge rushers last season, while Houston was ranked 49th.
In response to the criticism, Miller defended his signing by stating that he can contribute significantly beyond his on-field performance. During his introductory press conference, he expressed confidence in his ability to uplift his teammates, asserting that he is destined for recognition in mentorship roles.
