The Dallas Cowboys have signed veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, Texas, who indicated he had been in talks with the team before training camp began. Entering his 15th NFL season, Miller aims to strengthen the Cowboys' defense, particularly in pass protection, boasting a remarkable total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's signing intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially endangering the roster spots of multiple players. He is expected to play primarily as a left outside linebacker, a role that defensive coordinator Christian Parker will utilize during passing situations. Currently, Rashan Gary, acquired through a trade this spring, holds the starting position, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also training there.
On the right side, Donovan Ezeiruaku, in his second year, is anticipated to fill the role of right outside linebacker, with James Houston likely to be a significant rotational player. This scenario limits opportunities for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same spot and must prove their worth to make the 53-man roster.
Liufau, in particular, has shown promise as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills and may possess trade value. The Cowboys are also considering other players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for potential candidates. Details regarding further roster adjustments following Miller's signing are still pending.
