Retired Air Force veterans Mark and Nancy Thomson presented a historical tribute to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States at a First United Bank location in Sherman. The event took place as the community approaches the Fourth of July, with the couple emphasizing their continued commitment to public service despite their military retirement.
Mark Thomson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, discussed the difficulties faced by delegates in the 1700s. He outlined the challenges involved in declaring independence from Great Britain and uniting the thirteen colonies. Thomson stated that patriotism serves as a vital force for national unity.
Nancy Thomson appeared in the role of Betsy Ross, known for her work as an upholsterer and flag-maker. She explained the origins of the national symbol of unity and discussed how American identity influences neighboring nations. She noted that many visitors to the United States are impressed by the American way of life.
The couple expressed that understanding the nation's origins is essential. They highlighted the progress achieved over centuries and the freedoms maintained through the actions of courageous leaders who sought independence. Thomson remarked that the Declaration of Independence reveals the qualities of the nation's forefathers.
