The Denison City Council has authorized a complimentary one-year trial of a BRINC drone to assist police, fire, and other emergency agencies.

The approval grants multiple city departments access to aerial support for emergency operations. The Denison Police Department, fire department, emergency management, and public works will all be able to utilize the device.

The initiative aims to provide first responders with an additional aerial resource to support faster, more informed decision-making in the field. The Denison Police Department already operates its own drones, but this new trial is intended to expand available capabilities.

Officer Molina stated the technology could support a range of emergency scenarios. He noted it could assist the fire department with locating hotspots during fires, finding and rescuing lost individuals, and conducting disaster assessments after storms. The drone could also help provide resources during flooding events.

Molina said the drone could also benefit law enforcement operations. He stated it would be a benefit to not only the police department, but to the city as a whole.

He said the goal is to ensure that everybody within the city feels safe, and with this added technology, it will definitely give them the resources and the efficiency to give that speedy response to those in need.

Molina said the drone will be used strictly for emergencies and not in ways that could infringe on residents’ rights. He said they are not going to be using it for anything that could violate somebody’s rights. This is to make sure that they have safety in mind for all city residents as well as first responders.

The one-year trial comes at no cost to the city. If the program proves beneficial, officials said they will consider making it permanent.

Officials did not provide a timeline for when the drone would be delivered or when it would begin active use.
