Turning Point in the Ninth
The game’s decisive moment arrived in the bottom of the ninth inning when Alvarez launched a two-run home run to center field, measuring 424 feet. The blast extended Houston’s lead to 10-8 and sealed the victory for the home team. Alvarez had already contributed significantly earlier in the contest, including a two-run homer in the first inning and a single that drove in a run in the fifth. His performance was critical in overcoming a Rays team that had tied the game at 8-8 earlier in the seventh inning.
Scoring Sequences
Tampa Bay opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Caminero homered to left-center field, 437 feet, putting the Rays ahead 1-0. Houston responded immediately in the same inning with a two-run homer by Alvarez to left-center, 403 feet, giving them a 2-1 advantage. The Rays regained the lead in the second inning when Palacios hit a two-run homer to right-center, 409 feet, making it 3-2.
Houston answered in the third inning. Mesa Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Aranda, followed by a single from DeLuca that brought Caminero home. Mullins then stole home, extending the Astros’ lead to 6-2. Tampa Bay cut the deficit in the fourth inning when Caminero grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Walls scored on an error, and Diaz followed with a two-run homer to right-center, 394 feet, making the score 7-4.
The Rays mounted a comeback in the seventh inning. DeLuca homered to left, 355 feet, for Houston’s eighth run. However, Tampa Bay rallied with three consecutive runs: Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to score Trammell, Paredes singled to score Allen, and Dezenzo singled to score Altuve, tying the game at 8-8. Alvarez’s ninth-inning homer ultimately proved to be the difference.
