Texas Tech opened its first official practice ahead of the 2026-27 season Tuesday with Jamichael Stillwell, Darrion Williams and Donovan Atwell still listed as active players. Each is involved in a separate eligibility case and has sought a temporary injunction.
Williams is returning after playing for NC State in 2025-26. He previously spent two seasons with the Red Raiders, including the 2024-25 team that advanced to the Elite Eight. McCasland said Williams’ return followed an unusual process and that Williams eventually asked whether a scholarship could be held for him.
Williams is one of 31 players in a case that produced an order allowing a fifth season. Stillwell and Atwell are pursuing another season through separate cases. McCasland said Texas Tech will proceed with the players who are eligible and that the roster has enough capable athletes to absorb changes.
Atwell made 45.8% of his 3-point attempts last season while taking a career-high 8.4 per game, earning All-Big 12 honorable mention recognition. McCasland said the roster was assembled around athleticism, competitiveness and experience, along with a shared commitment to winning and to one another. Texas Tech will begin its season Nov. 2 at United Supermarkets Arena.
