Former teammates came back to Grayson College on Saturday to watch Annie Lockett, the school's first women's basketball All-American, take her place in its Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lockett played for the Vikings in the late 1980s. Over her two seasons the team won 56 games and claimed the program's first conference championship, according to the college and KTEN.
Her career almost ended before it started. Lockett told KTEN a knee injury at 16 threatened to stop her. "It was never going to stop me," she said. "So I got up, and I kept getting up every day, kept getting up, and here I am today."
Shawn Williams, who played alongside her, told the station that whenever teams were picked, Lockett was the one she wanted, because a side with Lockett on it was going to win.
Lockett also remembered the women's game before the three-point line arrived. A smaller ball and the new line, she told KTEN, "totally changed" how the game was played.
After Grayson, Lockett finished her college career at Louisiana Tech, the college said in its October announcement of the honor. She later went to a Houston Comets tryout and worked out alongside Comets stars Cynthia Cooper and Kim Perrot. Today she works for Bank of America as an information technology vice president.
