Denison’s Emergency Management team operates behind the scenes to coordinate planning and communication among local agencies. Their work aims to ensure preparedness for a wide range of incidents, including severe weather events, water outages, and gas line breaks.
Robert Richardson, the city’s Public Works Manager over Maintenance, stated that the primary objective is keeping the public safe so that everyone can return home unharmed. Much of this preparation occurs during periods without active crises, a concept Hunter Harris, the Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator, described as "blue sky days."
During these times, officials build relationships with necessary partners to ensure reliable support when a disaster strikes.
Harris emphasized the importance of establishing clear lines of communication with all stakeholders, including outside agencies, to facilitate effective coordination during emergencies. The team’s responsibilities extend beyond major natural disasters to include everyday disruptions such as traffic hazards, water main breaks, and gas line failures.
Severe weather remains a significant focus area for the department. The team prepares for tornadoes, ice storms, and various forms of flooding. Additionally, the presence of several dams within city limits adds another layer of potential hazard that officials must monitor and plan for.
