Kwikset has made the beta version of the Kevo smart lock application available for download on the Google Play store for Android users. The update allows consumers with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop software to test the functionality of the Kevo deadbolt.

This release marks the first time the company has offered compatibility with the Android platform, which requires Bluetooth Smart peripheral mode to function correctly.

Greg Williamson, chief marketing officer for Hardware and Home Improvement at Spectrum Brands, stated that the company is eager to extend the Kevo smart lock’s reach to the large base of Android users through this public beta program. The initial rollout supports specific devices launched with Google’s new Android L operating system, including the Nexus 6 smartphone and the Nexus 9 tablet.

Kwikset continues to refine the official app while the beta version is active.

The beta application provides access to several core features of the Kevo system. Users can utilize touch-to-open convenience by unlocking their door simply by having an authorized Android device nearby in a pocket or bag. The app also includes electronic key management tools, allowing homeowners to send or delete digital keys remotely to grant or revoke access at any time.

Additional capabilities within the beta include Guest, Anytime, and Scheduled eKeys. These options let users provide temporary 24-hour access, unrestricted entry, or specific day-and-time windows for visitors. A history log feature tracks lock activity, recording when keys were exchanged and when doors were locked or unlocked. The system also employs patent-pending inside and outside technology to detect a user’s location before granting entry.

Kwikset intends to use feedback gathered from the beta testing phase to implement all features in the official Android app launch. Williamson noted that as more devices become compatible with Bluetooth Smart technology, the company remains committed to providing consumers with smartphone-based home security management. The beta app was demonstrated on Nexus 6 devices at the International CES event held at the Sands Expo.
