Hospital leadership turnover remains elevated across the United States, with reports indicating 107 chief executive exits between January and November 2025. This figure represents a nearly six percent increase compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Some executives have attributed their departures to burnout caused by changing financial and regulatory pressures.
Among the recent transitions, Patrick Shannon left his position as CEO of Huntsville Memorial Hospital in Texas. He has been appointed as the new CEO of MountainView Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Additionally, Paul Peterson exited his role as assistant CEO at Lake Granbury Medical Center in Texas to become the chief operating officer for Detar Healthcare System in Victoria.
Other notable departures include Dean Mazzoni, who stepped down as president and CEO of Franciscan Health Michigan City in Indiana. He is scheduled to assume leadership at McLaren Greater Lansing in Michigan on March 16. Skip Gjolberg will also step down from his post at WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, West Virginia, in mid-March.
Retirement plans feature prominently in the current wave of exits. Timothy Quinn, MD, is set to retire as president and CEO of Mercy Cedar Rapids in Iowa on April 3. Michael Nagowski plans to retire July 1 from Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Brett Altman of Cass Health in Atlantic, Iowa, will retire on January 1, 2027.
Several executives are moving into non-CEO roles or different sectors. Carolyn Jackson is leaving Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Braintree in Massachusetts to become president and COO of Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island, effective February 2.
Helen Arteaga Landaverde exited her role as CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst to take a position as deputy mayor of health and human services in New York City.
Other leadership changes include Richard Duvall resigning from North Star Health Alliance in Ogdensburg, New York, and Tom Parker stepping down from Mammoth Hospital in California. Shawn McKenzie will retire November 30 from Seneca Healthcare District in California. Joanne Carrocino stepped down from Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional in New Jersey in November.
Further exits include Denten Park leaving Tenet Healthcare’s St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Jodi Coombs exiting her interim CEO role at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Thomas Klemond, MD, also stepped down as interim CEO of Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis.
