Cooks who think their chili can win a crowd over have three weeks to sign up for the Denison Soup Kitchen's annual Chili Cook-Off, the nonprofit's fundraiser set for Friday, Nov. 6.

The event starts at 6 p.m. at Park Avenue Church of Christ, 3000 Park Ave. in Denison, according to the online ticket page. Along with the cook-off contest, the evening includes a barbecue dinner, an auction and a raffle.

Tickets and entries

The ticket page lists general admission at $50, plus a $2.83 processing fee. A chili entry costs $25 plus a $1.68 fee and covers one person's admission along with a spot in the contest; anyone coming with a cook needs a separate ticket.

People who cannot attend can give a donation through the same page, with preset amounts of $25, $50 and $100 or a custom gift.

Terri Bernard and Jenny Mitchell of the soup kitchen previewed the event Wednesday on KTEN's Good Morning Texoma. The station reported that the fundraiser pays for the nonprofit's work serving hot meals and offering warm showers to people in need across Texoma throughout the year.

A kitchen that grew

The soup kitchen shares its mission of serving people without stable housing with the Homeless Empowerment Action Team, known as H.E.A.T. In March 2024, KXII reported that the two groups were preparing to move into a new building in Denison with a larger kitchen, laundry machines and three showers.

At that time, the soup kitchen's director said it was serving 50 to 70 meals a day, six days a week, and that the new kitchen would let it serve hotter and more nutritious meals.

The ticket page does not list a deadline for cook-off entries.
