Federal charging program lists a 250-kilowatt EV station for Denison, one of two new Phase II sites in Grayson County

TxDOT's program data shows a four-port fast-charging station planned in Denison and another in Sherman, part of $226 million for 321 stations statewide. A 2023 award for Sherman is still in pre-construction.

A fast-charging station for electric vehicles is planned inside Denison's city limits under the second round of the federal charging program TxDOT runs, according to the agency's program data, and a second Phase II station is slated for Sherman.

TxDOT said Thursday that it has awarded $226 million in federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure money for 321 charging stations in Phase II of the program, 264 of them in areas covered by metropolitan planning organizations and 57 in county seats. Two of those stations are listed under the Grayson County Metropolitan Planning Organization on TxDOT's program map.

The Denison and Sherman sites

Both Phase II awards in Grayson County went to Universal EV LLC, according to the program records, which list both as published Sept. 10, 2026, and both with a status of "Planning." Neither record shows a construction start or opening date.

  • Denison: four charging ports rated at 250 kilowatts each, with pull-through spaces. The record lists a $499,400 construction grant and $119,856 for operations and maintenance.
  • Sherman: four 250-kilowatt ports without pull-through spaces, with a $499,080 construction grant and $119,779 for operations and maintenance.

The records give map coordinates rather than street addresses. Run through the U.S. Census Bureau's geocoder, the Denison coordinates fall inside Denison's city limits and the Sherman coordinates inside Sherman's.

An earlier Sherman station still waits

The area already had one station in the program. A Phase I award to Francis Energy Charging, LLC for a four-port station in Sherman, rated at 150 to 250 kilowatts per port, has been listed since December 2023. The program data shows it in "Pre-Construction" status, with a $696,215 construction grant and $202,781 for operations and maintenance.

Its federal project agreement is dated Feb. 11, 2025, and no opening date is listed.

Phase I is still bringing stations online along Texas highways. TxDOT said 22 are open, five more are expected to open by the end of 2026 and another 30 are planned for 2027.

Why TxDOT says it is adding stations

The agency said the number of electric vehicles registered in Texas has risen to 532,282, up from 456,667 it reported in February.

"The demand for charging stations has never been higher," TxDOT Data Management Director Michael Chamberlain said in the agency's announcement. He recently drove more than 2,000 miles to inspect new stations, including ones in Wichita Falls and Mount Pleasant, the agency said.

Drivers can follow open and planned locations on TxDOT's statewide planning map.
