Denison opens its season with the game its fans circle first.

The Yellow Jackets host Sherman on Friday, Aug. 28 in the rivalry that has anchored Grayson County football for generations. Denison is ranked No. 261 in Texas by On3; Sherman is No. 387.

The climb after the opener

The schedule stiffens quickly. Denison travels to Decatur, ranked No. 117, on Sept. 4. Later comes Panther Creek, ranked No. 81, at home on Sept. 18, and Celina, ranked No. 20 in the state, one of the strongest programs the Yellow Jackets will see all year. Anna, ranked No. 60, is also on the schedule.

Denison plays nine regular-season games in all.

The shape of the season

A home opener against a rival is the best possible start for a program looking to build early momentum, and it is followed almost immediately by the toughest part of the slate. How Denison handles that middle stretch, against Decatur, Panther Creek, Anna and Celina, is likely to determine where the Yellow Jackets sit when playoff seeding is decided.

Kickoff Friday, Aug. 28. Rankings are On3's preseason Texas rankings.
