The Houston Texans have declared that they will cease contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud as the regular season approaches. General manager Nick Caserio mentioned that if a deal is not finalized before the team's first game against Buffalo on September 13, negotiations will be postponed until the following offseason.
Stroud, selected second overall in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option activated, ensuring his contract remains valid through 2027. Although Caserio had indicated the possibility of an extension prior to the season, no agreement has been reached.
At 24 years old, Stroud holds a record of 28-18 and has guided the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his initial three seasons. He was recognized as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a career-high completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a spot in the divisional playoffs.
Nonetheless, he encountered difficulties in the postseason, throwing five interceptions during a 28-16 defeat to New England. Further information regarding future negotiations remains undisclosed.
