The Houston Texans are preparing for their 2026 regular season and have officially announced their team captains. This year, four players have been selected for this leadership role, one less than the previous season. The chosen captains are quarterback C.J. Stroud, defensive end Will Anderson, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, and defensive back Jalen Pitre, who will serve as a captain for the first time.
The team’s adjustment in leadership comes following the departure of veteran running back Dare Ogunbowale, who held a captaincy last year and is currently a free agent after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders. Wide receiver Nico Collins, who was also a captain in the previous season, is the only returning player not included in this year's leadership group.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans highlighted the significance of leadership in the team, which reflects the strong culture he has developed since taking over in 2023. The Texans have prioritized acquiring players recognized for their leadership abilities, including safety Reed Blankenship, signed from the Philadelphia Eagles, along with several draft picks who were captains in college.
Each of the four captains has a minimum of three years with the Texans, with Pitre being the longest-serving player as he enters his fifth season. The Texans will introduce their captains during their first game against the Buffalo Bills, scheduled for 12 p.m. CT on September 13th.
