Southern Methodist University (SMU) has selected Derek Gossler to serve as its new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This appointment is part of the university's strategy to boost its competitive position in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by prioritizing revenue generation, which is essential in contemporary college athletics.
Gossler comes with over 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticket sales, and commercial strategy. He most recently held the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming, where he played a key role in enhancing financial contributions through the Cowboy Joe Club and reached unprecedented levels of revenue from premium seating and ticket sales.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler contributed significantly at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he helped achieve five consecutive years of record fundraising. His background also includes a notable role at Arizona State University, where he was involved in raising $86 million during a major fundraising initiative and played a part in establishing the men's hockey program with substantial donor support.
Gossler's diverse experience across various athletic departments positions him to effectively meet SMU's challenges as it operates within one of the largest and most affluent markets in the country. He is expected to enhance revenue through creative strategies while fostering strong connections with fans, supporters, and corporate partners.
As SMU continues to work on elevating its athletic programs nationally, Gossler's hiring underscores a commitment to sustaining progress in revenue generation during the Mustangs' transition into the ACC. Details regarding Gossler's specific plans for SMU's athletic revenue generation have not yet been revealed.
