The Dallas Cowboys have reported substantial advancements in their defensive capabilities, as noted by star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. He indicated that the team's progress is 'night and day' compared to last season, attributing this transformation to the new coaching staff and an intensive training schedule.
In the previous season, the Cowboys faced challenges under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, finishing at the bottom of the league for opponent passing yards and points allowed. They also ranked 30th in total yards given up and tied for 22nd in sacks. The team previously performed better under Dan Quinn, who has since taken a position with the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker now serving as the defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have adopted a new mindset and strategy. Williams emphasized that daily practices against a formidable offense have played a crucial role in their defensive improvement. He remarked, "It's been amazing — from where we started off in OTAs to where we are at now," while also recognizing that there are still aspects to refine.
In August, the team extended Williams' contract for three years at $105.9 million, making him among the top-paid interior defensive linemen in the NFL. Last season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and recorded 53 combined tackles over 15 games, receiving a strong overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
The Cowboys have also enhanced their defense through key signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, as well as acquiring veteran linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. In the 2026 NFL Draft, they selected safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence to further strengthen their defensive roster.
