Doug McNamee, Baylor's new athletic director, has not set a specific win total for head coach Dave Aranda to meet in order to keep his position beyond the 2026 season. Instead, McNamee highlighted the importance of building momentum and support for the football program.
In comments reported by CBS Sports college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah, McNamee explained, "It’s not about the numbers. It’s the momentum; it’s the feel, and it’s the vibe around the program." This perspective clarifies the expectations for Aranda as he approaches his seventh season at Baylor, where he holds a record of 36-37.
McNamee called for increased engagement from supporters, urging them to attend games and contribute to NIL initiatives and scholarships. He stated, "We need greater commitment and investment from our constituency, both in as simple as passive as watching the game on TV and being in the stadium, to as explicit and as involved as making significant financial support."
As Baylor prepares for its upcoming season opener against Auburn on September 5, McNamee has made it clear that demonstrating progress and fostering belief in the program will be crucial for securing continued support. He noted that the program must provide a compelling story to attract investment and engagement from the community.
