Florida State is turning its attention to a road matchup with No. 10 Alabama after athletic director Michael Alford was fired. Coach Mike Norvell praised Alford and his wife, Laura, and said the Seminoles will continue preparing under interim athletic director Bruce Warwick. Norvell called Warwick an experienced professional and plans to address the leadership change with players Tuesday after they were off Monday.
Florida State is 1-1 following a disappointing loss to SMU, but Norvell said the result did not reduce his confidence in the team. He also praised quarterback Ashton Daniels’ work during the week, including his practice approach and focus on controllable areas.
Two freshman linebackers, Izayia Williams and Daylen Green, are out for the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected back this year but will be sidelined for an extended period. Norvell said those absences could open opportunities on defense and special teams.
The Seminoles’ next game is Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Norvell described Alabama’s defense as fast and explosive, with a bigger front than last season, and said Florida State must maintain offensive balance, win individual matchups and create big plays.
