The Dallas Cowboys have lost Malik Davis for the season after he injured his hip during Friday’s practice at The Star in Frisco. The non-contact outdoor workout was only slightly more involved than a walk-through, according to the team. Davis was taken away by cart, underwent surgery later that night and was placed on injured reserve for the season.
Davis had won the backup running back job behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August. He played well in training camp and the preseason, and the Cowboys expected him to be part of their offensive plans for Sunday’s game against the Giants.
Stephen Jones, the team’s chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that the injury was disappointing for both Davis and the Cowboys. Jones said Davis had earned the position and that other players would now be needed.
Dallas signed veteran Emari Demercado for added depth and special-teams help. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could see a larger role. The Cowboys could elevate him for the game or place him on the active roster.
Davis, an undrafted free agent who joined Dallas in 2022, had 252 rushing yards and two touchdowns last season. He played 12 games as a rookie, totaling 161 yards, and later spent two seasons on the practice squad. His 103-yard performance last season was his only career game above 100 yards.
