BJ Edwards, a former guard for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to play for the Oklahoma Sooners. This commitment was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards is eligible for an additional season of college basketball due to a five-for-five temporary injunction that grants another year of eligibility to the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards spent three seasons at SMU in Dallas after initially committing to the University of Tennessee out of high school. He played only 14 games at Tennessee before transferring to SMU via the NCAA transfer portal. During his time in Dallas, he played under two head coaches: Rob Lanier during the 2022-2023 season and Andy Enfield, who was hired later.
Despite the coaching changes, Edwards remained a significant contributor to the team.
His most productive season came last year, when he appeared in 28 games despite dealing with injuries late in the season. In that campaign, Edwards averaged 12.7 points per game while shooting 47.4% from the field. He also recorded 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.
His defensive impact was notable, earning him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC. He averaged 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals per game in the 2025-2026 season.
Although SMU expressed interest in retaining Edwards, he chose to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are looking to improve their roster after finishing the previous season with a 21-16 overall record and a 7-11 mark in SEC play. The team did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, missing the chance to make back-to-back appearances.
