Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver at TCU, was hospitalized for three days following an alleged attack by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident occurred on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex, where Fields reportedly struck Ezukanma in the head while he was seated and distracted by his phone.
Witnesses indicated that after the initial blow, Fields kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, rendering him unconscious.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospital transfer after initial assessments confirmed a brain bleed. He was later moved to the ICU for further monitoring, where scans indicated that the hematoma had increased in size. He was discharged on August 16, also dealing with a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and subsequently turned himself in to law enforcement, facing charges of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond.
Following the incident, Fields conveyed regret in a message to TCU police, admitting to making an emotional decision and offering to pay for Ezukanma's medical expenses. TCU head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the situation, emphasizing that such behavior was uncharacteristic of both the team and Fields.
