Howell, who has started 18 of 20 games in the NFL, is facing the possibility of being cut in favor of Milton, who has reportedly excelled in recent preseason performances. Ben Grimaldi from USA Today noted that while Howell initially had an edge, Milton's strong showings have altered the competitive landscape.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer mentioned that Howell had been slightly ahead in the competition but acknowledged Milton's notable improvements. He remarked that the training camp competition is very close, with Howell perhaps having a slight lead.
The Cowboys must decide whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, which complicates their roster management, as retaining three could require cuts at other positions. Howell's fully guaranteed contract of $2.5 million for the year means the team would still incur that expense if he is let go.
As the final week of training camp progresses, the Cowboys will finalize their decision, potentially influenced by their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints.
