Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis has been penalized with a fine of $6,735 for an incident involving unnecessary roughness in a preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The infraction took place in the first quarter at the 12:07 mark, following a five-yard carry.
Although no penalty was called during the game, the NFL later imposed the fine as part of its routine handling of preseason violations.
Davis stands out as the sole Cowboys player fined during the preseason. The highest fine issued in the league during this period was given to Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Tytus Howard, amounting to $12,537 for a comparable violation in the first week of preseason.
Currently, Davis is in the second year of a two-year contract worth $2.1 million, which includes a base salary of $1.1 million for the year 2026. The fine represents about 0.6% of his earnings. The NFL directs all fines collected to the Professional Athletes Foundation, which aids athletes in need and promotes health and safety initiatives.
In terms of his position on the team, Davis has been competing for the backup running back role against Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Although Blue was anticipated to secure a roster spot, he was released alongside Mafah, allowing Davis to assume the backup position behind starting running back Javonte Williams. Following the roster finalization, the Cowboys added Emari Demercado from waivers for additional depth.
