The Dallas Cowboys have released running back Israel Abanikanda and added Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons, opening a roster spot for Goodson. The change came after Dallas gained 69 yards on the ground against the New York Giants in Week 1.
Abanikanda appeared in six NFL games, all for the New York Jets during the 2023 season, and did not secure a consistent role in the league. At Pitt in 2022, he ran 239 times for 1,431 yards and scored 20 touchdowns.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said New York’s defensive front affected the running game early by creating too much penetration. He said Dallas was outplayed physically along the line of scrimmage. Schottenheimer also said Javonte Williams struggled to find openings at first, while the Cowboys adjusted following halftime.
