The Dallas Cowboys have released running back Jaydon Blue, a former fifth-round draft pick from the University of Texas, as they shift away from their "Thunder and Lightning" running back strategy. Blue's difficulties with maturity limited his chances during his rookie season, and Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer suggested that a return to the practice squad was unlikely.
Shortly after his release, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Blue to their practice squad. In a related development, the Cowboys have added Emari Demercado, a former standout with the Arizona Cardinals, to strengthen their running back lineup.
Demercado, who is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds, has shown versatility and experience, boasting an average of 6.5 yards per carry during his time with Arizona.
Demercado's impressive performance caught the eye of Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who had coached him previously. In his rookie season, Demercado averaged 4.9 yards per carry and improved to 9.3 yards per carry in 2024. He accumulated a total of 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries over three seasons with the Cardinals.
The Cowboys' current running back roster features Malik Davis as the secondary option and Hunter Luepke as a fullback. Israel Abanikanda has been recalled to the practice squad, while the status of second-year player Phil Mafah is still unclear. The Cowboys will be monitoring Blue's performance with the Eagles, hoping he does not fulfill his potential in a rival team's colors.
