Jacob Fields, a former football player at TCU, is facing an aggravated assault charge following a locker room fight on August 13 that resulted in teammate Dozie Ezukanma being hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed. Fields' attorney, Coby DuBose, argues that the coaching staff was aware of growing tensions on the practice field prior to the altercation.
DuBose refutes the arrest warrant's claim that Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma, asserting instead that Fields approached his teammate to greet him before things escalated. He claims Fields had expressed concerns to the coaching staff about rough treatment during practices, emphasizing that he had communicated his frustrations about being subjected to cheap shots.
The attorney contends that the coaching staff did not take the situation seriously and could have acted to prevent the fight. He described the lead-up to the incident as involving behavior beyond typical football roughness, including instances of spitting and illegal hits. Supporting DuBose's assertions, Fields' agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, noted the presence of unnecessary aggression during practices.
In response, a source from the TCU football program challenged these allegations, while athletic director Mike Buddie stated that the coaching staff handled the situation properly. This source, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, expressed skepticism regarding the accounts presented by DuBose and Miller. Further details about the investigation and the actions of the coaching staff remain unclear as the situation unfolds.
