Head Coach Neal Brown has expressed serious concerns about the North Texas Mean Green offensive line as preparations for the 2026 season begin. After a recent practice, he remarked on the unit's shortcomings, indicating they are not meeting the team's requirements at this stage. Issues highlighted include a lack of effectiveness in the run game and inadequate pad level.
The offensive line was pivotal in North Texas' impressive 2025 season, contributing to the team achieving the highest number of rushing touchdowns in the nation, totaling 49, and being recognized for having the top-scoring offense. Key figures from last season included offensive guard Gabe Blair, honored as a First Team All-American Conference selection and ranked as the third-best guard by Pro Football Focus.
With the loss of all five starting offensive linemen from the previous year, the team is now tasked with rebuilding this critical unit. Brown noted that only two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have shown potential during fall camp, with Strong emerging as a standout performer.
Brown stressed the need to identify the right mix of players, emphasizing that college football requires more than just two offensive linemen. He indicated that all positions on the line are up for grabs, regardless of scholarship status, as the coaching staff aims to create a physically dominant group before their first game on September 5.
The pressure is mounting on Brown, along with offensive line coach Matt Mattox and run game coordinator Mike Bloesch, to enhance the offensive line's performance ahead of the season. Brown cautioned that if the line's performance does not improve, the team will face significant challenges.
