The veteran quarterback entered last Friday’s game against Houston and threw an interception on his first play while trying to throw the pass away, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later came back into the contest near the goal line and ran 3 yards for a touchdown. His appearances alongside Hammond have produced both useful plays and turnovers.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency backup. The move came after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ usage among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. The team has not determined how it will deploy Castellanos in future games, including whether he will continue receiving opportunities near the goal line.
