The Atlanta Hawks came back from an early 19-point hole to beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday night at Frost Bank Center.
San Antonio started fast, leading 39-20 after one quarter. Atlanta answered with a 42-30 second quarter to pull within 69-62 at halftime, then won the third 31-26 to trail just 95-93 going into the final period. The Hawks finished it off by outscoring the Spurs 30-21 in the fourth.
Atlanta's bench carried much of the load. Asa Newell scored 16 points in 14 minutes, making 5 of 8 shots and 5 of 6 free throws, and the Hawks outscored San Antonio by 21 points while he was on the floor. Kingston Flemings added 15 points, five assists and three steals off the bench. CJ McCollum scored 14, Onyeka Okongwu had 13 points and five assists, and Dyson Daniels posted 13 points and 11 rebounds.
For San Antonio, Dylan Harper led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and added four assists. Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia each scored 14, and Devin Vassell had 12. Victor Wembanyama played 17 minutes and finished with nine points and six rebounds. Keldon Johnson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
