The Military Veteran Peer Network, operating as Walker House in Denison, presented its Hometown Hero award to Brian Creager on Tuesday. Creager, who serves as the co-director of kitchen operations at the facility, was honored for his contributions since joining the organization in 2019.
The ceremony was originally planned for the previous week but was delayed following the sudden death of Creager’s wife. Members of the Walker House community attended the event to offer support to Creager during that time.
Before moving to Texas, Creager worked as a fire captain in California, where he spent decades as a wildland firefighter. He described the work as fulfilling because each fire presented a unique challenge. However, he eventually recognized that the physical demands of the job were better suited for younger individuals.
Creager noted that the transition from the fire service to the military-focused culture at Walker House was eased by the similarities between the two fields. He stated that he understands the environment better and feels he fits in well.
In his current role, Creager helps prepare meals for the organization’s members. He said he looks forward to the work because of the positive atmosphere it creates, noting that good meals encourage conversation and enjoyment among the veterans. Kathy Bass, a Walker House member, described the kitchen staff as a close-knit subgroup within the larger organization. She praised Creager for his speed and initiative, stating that he completes tasks without needing direction.
Beyond his duties in the kitchen, Creager collects photographs of veterans he encounters to preserve their memories in a book. He described this effort as a personal rescue project to ensure their stories are not forgotten.
