A group of Denison elementary school students served lemonade on Monday to honor the memory of their classmate, eight-year-old Rhett Richards. The event was held on Labor Day, with one classmate organizing the fundraiser to support Richards' family after his passing.
Richards died on August 9. The lemonade stand was designed as a way for friends to remember him and provide financial assistance to his relatives. All money raised from the sales will be donated in his name.
Community members gathered at the stand to share memories of the young boy. Customer Debbie Errico described Richards as someone who knew everything about tractors and frequently discussed which ones he was operating with her. She noted that he always wanted to work alongside his grandfather and was kind to everyone he met.
Family friend Wesley Pool also shared recollections, characterizing Richards as a funny and curious child who loved helping others. Pool said the boy was constantly asking questions and had a deep interest in tractors.
The fundraiser took place during hot weather conditions in Denison. A heat advisory was in effect for portions of north central and northeast Texas, with heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees. Temperatures in Denison were reported at 91 degrees with clear skies.
