Susan Currier and Rayce Guess were recognized Friday in Sherman as the month’s honorary heroes for their dedication to community service. The pair was honored by Walker House, an organization that highlighted their shared commitment to volunteering.
Currier, an Air Force veteran who served from 1987 to 2009, retired as a senior master sergeant after 15 years of overseas deployments in locations including Bogota, Colombia, and Turkey. She received multiple military awards during her career, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Beyond her military service, Currier volunteers with several organizations in Durant, Oklahoma, including the Hands for Hope Food Bank, the Brotherhood/Sisterhood Ministry, and the Choctaw Cultural Center. She also supports Walker House, where she has contributed significant time.
Currier expressed humility regarding the recognition, noting that personal connections mean more to her than accolades.
“It’s hard to hear good things. I thought I really I would rather have a hug from someone or see a smile when they come in and maybe they go to our food pantry,” Currier said.
She also noted that her family was unaware of the extent of her military background, describing the environment as different from what they are used to seeing.
Guess, a former Denison city councilman and educator, was named alongside Currier. He spent 27 years in education, teaching Advanced Placement World History and Geography before retiring in 2015. Guess currently serves on the boards of approximately 10 nonprofit charities in Grayson County and founded Hometown Heroes, a group that honors local military veterans.
Guess has also worked as an actor since 2016 and volunteered with the Military Veteran Peer Network for nearly four years as an event coordinator. He credited his mother’s influence for his desire to serve others.
