Griffin's Dominant Outing

Washington Nationals pitcher Foster Griffin anchored the victory with a masterful seven-inning performance, allowing just one earned run while striking out nine batters. Griffin’s efficiency set the tone for the home crowd at Nationals Park, where he retired the side with minimal friction through the first four innings before the offense began to mount its assault.

Griffin (10-2) departed after the seventh inning having faced the minimum through most of the game. Orlando Ribalta and Justin Lawrence closed out the contest, each pitching a perfect inning to secure the win. The Nationals bullpen combined for two scoreless frames, allowing two hits and no runs to preserve the lead.

Early Offensive Surge

The Nationals broke the game open in the third inning, capitalizing on Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti’s struggles. With the score tied 0-0, CJ Abrams hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Wood, giving Washington a 1-0 lead. The momentum shifted further when Lile doubled to left, driving in García Jr. to make it 2-0.

The inning exploded in the fourth when García Jr. launched a 417-foot home run to right center. The blast scored both Ruiz and Wood, extending the Nationals’ lead to 5-0. The three-run homer was a pivotal moment that put significant pressure on the Houston pitching staff.

Houston's Late Rally Falls Short

The Astros began to chip away in the fifth inning. Matthews singled to center to score Diaz, making it 5-1. Shortly after, Abrams homered to right center (415 feet) for his second extra-base hit of the game, pushing the lead to 6-1. The Nationals added two more runs in the frame: Lile scored on a groundout by Tena, and Crews scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruiz, making the score 8-1.

Houston managed a late run in the eighth inning. Allen reached on an infield single, and Dezenzo scored on a throwing error by shortstop Abrams. Allen advanced to second, making the final score 8-2. Despite the late scoring, the Astros could not overcome the early deficit.

Final Notes

Arrighetti (7-5) took the loss after pitching four innings, allowing seven hits and eight earned runs. He was relieved by Alimber Santa, Nate Pearson, and Cristian Javier, who combined for four scoreless innings.

The Nationals improved to 48-46, while the Astros fell to 46-49. The game drew an attendance of 17,760 at Nationals Park in Washington, District of Columbia.
