Griffin's Dominant Outing
Washington Nationals pitcher Foster Griffin anchored the victory with a masterful seven-inning performance, allowing just one earned run while striking out nine batters. Griffin’s efficiency set the tone for the home crowd at Nationals Park, where he retired the side with minimal friction through the first four innings before the offense began to mount its assault.
Griffin (10-2) departed after the seventh inning having faced the minimum through most of the game. Orlando Ribalta and Justin Lawrence closed out the contest, each pitching a perfect inning to secure the win. The Nationals bullpen combined for two scoreless frames, allowing two hits and no runs to preserve the lead.
Early Offensive Surge
The Nationals broke the game open in the third inning, capitalizing on Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti’s struggles. With the score tied 0-0, CJ Abrams hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Wood, giving Washington a 1-0 lead. The momentum shifted further when Lile doubled to left, driving in García Jr. to make it 2-0.
The inning exploded in the fourth when García Jr. launched a 417-foot home run to right center. The blast scored both Ruiz and Wood, extending the Nationals’ lead to 5-0. The three-run homer was a pivotal moment that put significant pressure on the Houston pitching staff.
