Denison's fire department will receive $74,478 from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, according to a statement Sen. John Cornyn's office issued Thursday.

The award is one of five to North Texas departments totaling $2,574,956. Fort Worth received the largest share, $1,550,695, followed by Cooper at $807,272. Van Alstyne received $80,511 and Krum $62,000.

Cornyn's statement said the grants can support recruiting and training, community fire prevention, emergency response, and replacing or upgrading equipment. It did not list what Denison's department intends to buy and gave no spending timeline.

The program is distinct from FEMA's SAFER grants, which pay part of the cost of hiring firefighters.
