Cigna Healthcare is broadening its personalized care management initiatives by integrating artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to detect members with developing or chronic health issues sooner. The expansion targets an additional 20% of members who exhibit signs of conditions such as cancer, heart disease, high-risk pregnancy, behavioral health challenges, and kidney disease.
The insurer states that these enhanced capabilities will allow clinicians to intervene before conditions worsen, thereby avoiding more severe and expensive health complications. By identifying needs earlier, the company aims to help patients manage their health more effectively. Cigna projects that this approach will lower medical costs by an average of $2,000 annually per participant, resulting in $200 million in savings over a three-year period.
Stanley Crittenden, M.D., chief medical officer at Cigna Healthcare, emphasized the difficulty patients face when navigating healthcare after a new diagnosis. He noted that the goal is to facilitate connections between customers and experienced clinicians who can explain options and maximize support available through their health plans. Crittenden added that earlier guidance helps ensure individuals receive appropriate care at the right time.
Existing care management programs have shown significant results, with a 95% satisfaction rate among participants. Members who engaged with support early experienced a 42% reduction in avoidable inpatient stays. The new AI-driven enhancements will offer more individualized engagement, allowing customers to communicate with clinicians via text, phone, or email based on their preference.
Bryan Holgerson, president of Cigna Healthcare U.S., highlighted the rising costs of hospital care, emergency services, and prescription drugs. He stated that the company is investing in clinical programs and tools to help customers avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and better manage chronic conditions. Holgerson explained that combining predictive analytics with clinical expertise allows for earlier identification of health needs and more impactful personalized support.
This expansion complements existing services like My Personal Champion, which provides specialized assistance and a dedicated point of contact for members with complex health conditions. The program aims to coordinate support for those facing difficult health challenges.
