The Cigna Group has introduced Pharmacy Forward, a new specialty pharmacy program that utilizes artificial intelligence to accelerate the prescription process for patients with complex medical needs. The initiative is being rolled out through the company’s Accredo Specialty Pharmacy division and is supported by a $100 million investment planned through 2028.
The platform integrates AI technology across prescription intake, clinical support, and fulfillment stages. Cigna projects that the system will cut prescription processing times by 50 percent and significantly reduce administrative tasks for clinicians. The company also expects the program to improve medication adherence through expanded digital support tools.
Logistics are a key component of the rollout. The company notes that 90 percent of Accredo patients reside within a one-day ground delivery radius. Cigna estimates the initiative will generate approximately $400 million in cumulative value by the end of 2028.
The launch aligns with Cigna’s broader strategy to expand Evernorth Health Services, which serves as a primary growth driver for the organization. Financial results for the first quarter of 2026 reflect this focus, with Evernorth’s adjusted revenues increasing 9 percent year over year to $58.4 billion. Pretax adjusted earnings for the Specialty and Care Services segment grew by 20 percent during the same period.
Cigna aims to use technology to simplify pharmacy services and encourage the adoption of biosimilars. While the investment is not expected to significantly impact near-term earnings, the company believes it will strengthen Evernorth’s position in the specialty pharmacy market. The move coincides with higher adjusted earnings per share guidance for 2026 and the leadership of CEO Brian Evanko.
