Caterpillar Inc. has acquired Skycatch Inc., a provider of spatial data capture and analysis solutions for the mining sector. The transaction adds near-real-time spatial data capabilities and artificial intelligence tools to Caterpillar's existing portfolio of data-driven mining technologies. This move follows the company's recent purchase of RPMGlobal, further expanding its resources for helping customers optimize material movement in mining operations.
Denise Johnson, group president of Caterpillar Resource Industries, stated that the acquisition supports the company's strategy to address complex customer challenges. She noted that integrating Skycatch's high-resolution spatial data into RPM and MineStar solutions aims to enhance safety, productivity, and predictability across mine sites. These improvements are intended to benefit both staffed and autonomous fleets.
Skycatch technology captures large-scale, high-precision spatial data and applies AI to identify, measure, and interact with that information. This process provides mining operators with more current views of their sites, which the company says improves the speed and accuracy of decision-making. The system generates a near-real-time digital twin of the mining site, which integrates directly into existing software workflows.
Richard Mathews, CEO of RPMGlobal, commented that Skycatch's ability to process large volumes of data at faster speeds allows for a different operational approach. He explained that having a near real-time spatial view enables miners to adjust plans as conditions change, improve alignment between planning and execution, and deliver more predictable outcomes. The integration of accurate, current data into planning workflows is expected to reduce delays and increase confidence in daily operations.
Christian Sanz, founder and CEO of Skycatch, expressed pride in the company's decade-long development and excitement about the next phase with Caterpillar. He stated that the move strengthens their ability to support customers and increases the value delivered to them.
Caterpillar, which reported $67.6 billion in sales and revenues for 2025, is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. The company operates through Power & Energy, Construction Industries, and Resource Industries segments. RPMGlobal, a global leader in mining software solutions, has served the industry for nearly 50 years, operating in over 125 countries. Skycatch specializes in generating high-precision 3D data and insights for mining and industrial operations.
