Rakell Decides It

Rickard Rakell scored the deciding shootout goal, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins, playing at home, improved to 3-2-1 with seven points, while the visiting Stars fell to 2-2-1 with five points.

The shootout followed a scoreless first two periods and a third period in which each team scored once. Rakell’s wrist shot was the final score listed in the shootout sequence, settling the game after Dallas and Pittsburgh traded goals in regulation.

Third-Period Trade

Pittsburgh broke through first in the third period. Connor Dewar put the Penguins ahead 1-0 with a backhand goal, with Blake Lizotte credited with the assist. The goal was Dewar’s first, and Lizotte recorded his second assist.

Dallas answered later in the period to make it 1-1. Tyler Seguin scored on a tip-in, assisted by Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. Seguin’s goal was his first, while Robertson was credited with his second assist and Heiskanen with his first.

Neither team scored in the first or second period, and the 1-1 tie held through the remainder of regulation. The score by period was 0-0 after the first, 0-0 after the second and 1-1 after the third before the shootout decided the result.

Shootout Sequence

Ben Kindel scored for Pittsburgh on a wrist shot, followed by a wrist-shot goal from Sidney Crosby. Seguin scored for Dallas on a wrist shot, and Wyatt Johnston also scored for the Stars. Rakell then scored on a wrist shot for Pittsburgh.

Dewar finished with one goal and one point for Pittsburgh, while Lizotte had one assist. For Dallas, Seguin had one goal and one point, and Heiskanen had one assist.

The announced attendance at PPG Paints Arena was 18,192. Pittsburgh’s record after the game was 3-2-1, worth seven points, and Dallas’ record was 2-2-1, worth five points.
