Duchene gives Dallas a creator it needs more often

Matt Duchene squeezed 45 points into 57 appearances last season. Dallas could use a little less squeezing.

The Stars included him in their initial roster Monday, retaining a forward whose offensive contribution was substantial whenever he played. The harder question for the coming season is how often Dallas will receive it. A useful secondary attack has to be available on ordinary nights, too, when nobody is especially interested in celebrating its efficiency.

Duchene’s 2025-26 line had 29 assists alongside 16 goals. That balance is the attraction: Dallas gets another source of offense without needing every valuable possession to end on his stick. His contribution should give the attack more ways to function, particularly on nights when its leading scorers receive most of the attention.

Those 45 points amount to roughly four-fifths of a point per appearance. He averaged 16:31 on the ice, a meaningful assignment without consuming an outsized portion of each game. The case for keeping that kind of production in the forward group is easy to understand. The challenge is making it add up over the schedule.

A club planning its offense has two different calculations to make. One concerns what a player produces when selected; the other concerns how much of the season that contribution actually covers. Duchene offered a strong answer to the first calculation.

Fifty-seven appearances leave considerably more work for everyone else than a near-complete season would. No multiplication of his scoring rate can fill those other lineup cards.

His finishing also deserves some scrutiny. Sixteen goals on 89 shots produced an 18.0% conversion rate. Dallas should welcome that efficiency while resisting the temptation to budget for precisely the same return.

A few shots finding a post or a glove instead would change the percentage appreciably. The assist contribution gives his offensive value a second foundation, which is another reason to pay attention to the composition of those 45 points.

Sam Steel provides a useful reference. He appeared 73 times and collected 33 points, made up of 12 goals and 21 assists. Duchene produced more despite the smaller schedule. Steel, meanwhile, occupied a place in the lineup on more nights. Both contributions have a place in roster construction; neither can simply be substituted for the other.

Their average workloads were close: Steel logged 16:04, against Duchene’s 16:31. That makes the production gap especially interesting. The difference was not accompanied by a vast difference in minutes per appearance. It also leaves questions that the totals cannot answer, including the opportunities and combinations each player received. Similar minutes make a comparison worthwhile without making their assignments identical.

The temptation with a productive partial season is to imagine the same rate stretched across a full one. For Dallas, a more practical approach would be to plan adequate support around Duchene and welcome any additional accumulation he supplies. That protects the team from turning an optimistic projection into a requirement.

It also gives coaches an alternative to asking whichever scorer remains available to absorb every extra responsibility. It also lets the forward be judged on the work in front of him instead of a total created on a calculator.

There is no reason to demand that a supporting player become the entire offense. There is every reason to expect useful production from the minutes he receives. Duchene has supplied evidence that he can meet that standard. The next improvement Dallas needs is more occasions to use it, with enough alternatives available when it cannot.

The Stars kept a creator in the group on Monday. Now comes the less glamorous part of building an attack: ensuring that the contribution has somewhere to go when its usual supplier is absent.
