Grayson County's part-time animal control officer job is now a full-time position after commissioners voted 5-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to convert it, according to the county's meeting records.
The request came from the county Health Department, which oversees animal control. Health Department Director Amanda Ortez was listed as presenting it, with Precinct 2 Commissioner Art Arthur sponsoring the item. The change took effect Oct. 10, according to the budget paperwork.
Paying for it
The court approved moving $75,159 within the fiscal 2027 budget. Of that, $58,564 goes to animal control salaries and $16,595 to benefits, which the request says covers nine months of health insurance for the position.
The money comes from three places:
- $35,134 that had been set aside for the part-time animal control job
- $30,160 in part-time salary money for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 that the request says was put in the budget in error
- $9,865 from an indigent health clerk position that is vacant and, under the plan, will stay open for seven more pay periods
Commissioners also approved an amendment to the county's fiscal 2027 salary order to reflect the change. The order lists animal control officer pay at $59,969 a year and part-time animal control work at $24.23 an hour.
